DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) announced today that an expanded Inside|Out installation is on view on Mackinac Island. The installation, which features 21 high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA collection, will remain throughout the summer and includes updated artwork selections, as well as the addition of pieces in the downtown district.
Inside|Out, a celebrated program by the DIA, brings art to outdoor spaces and aims to connect residents and visitors with artistic experiences outside the traditional museum setting, making art accessible and engaging to more individuals and families in the community. The Mackinac Island installation seeks to create opportunities for visitors to engage with artworks in the DIA at key spots around the island, increasing access to the museum’s world-class collection for residents of the island as well as visitors from around the world.
“Inside|Out on Mackinac Island adds another unique experience to the appeal of visiting this already popular Michigan vacation spot,” said Julie McFarland, Executive Director of Public Affairs and Engagement at the DIA. “We hope visitors will enjoy this artistic addition to their visit to the island, whether it’s spotting a Van Gogh while riding in a horse-drawn carriage or appreciating a John Singer Sargent while they shop downtown.”
The program will see installations at iconic locations such as the Grand Hotel and Mission Point Resort, two of the most visited spots on the island, as well as in the downtown district at locations that include the Mackinac Island State Park and Manoogian Museum. Featured pieces include works by renowned artists like Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, and more. Each artwork will feature updated informational panels with QR codes linking to an interactive map and detailed art information, inviting you to explore the art in a new and engaging way.
The expanded presence of Inside|Out on Mackinac Island was made possible in partnership with the Mackinac Island Arts Council (MAC), which worked with the DIA to bring the program to the island.
"MAC is thrilled to support InsideOut. As with DIA's mission, we also strive to be a gathering place for arts & culture, bringing free access to programs like this one to the millions of visitors that come to Mackinac Island,” said Laura Raisch, the Executive Director of the Mackinac Island Arts Council. “Much like Detroit, we are a melting pot of diversity with day visitors, guests, Island residents and employees –– people who come from all over the world. We don't necessarily expect to see museum-quality art on the side of a walking path or in the park.
“We hope that it heightens the experience and helps to show the wonderful facets of the arts and culture community on Mackinac. It's a fantastic opportunity for all of us!"
