You Belong Here

Discover. Inspire. Appreciate.

We believe that art has the power to connect. Driven by our mission, we create experiences that speak to human stories through time, place, and culture. Our team members and community inspire us to promote practices that begin with dignity and respect, to foster a culture of belonging for all.

About IDEA at the DIA

The Detroit Institute of Arts has a long-standing commitment to creating a more diverse and inclusive environment for museum-goers and DIA team members, beginning in 2015 with the creation of a Talent and Diversity subcommittee of its board of directors.

In 2020, the Detroit Institute of Arts established its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, And Access (IDEA) strategic framework to unify efforts across the museum. This structure laid the foundation for ongoing dialogue to transform how the DIA best serves internal and external stakeholders. As the IDEA journey moves forward, the museum is committed to:

  • Cultivating community partners and partnerships with non-profit, arts, and cultural organizations within the tri-county area to inform the visitor experience.
  • Determining and prioritizing annual IDEA goals and action plans across the museum, informed by team members at all levels of the museum.
  • Incorporating visitor experience data to inform organizational changes that foster an environment of welcome and comfort.
  • Continuously examining areas for improvement to provide accessible, inclusive spaces and quality museum experiences for all, as prioritized in our strategic plan.

We invite you to learn more about the museum's progress with Foundations for Change: An Introduction to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, And Access at the DIA – the first biennial overview of IDEA work across the organization.
