The Nightmare (55.5.A-D1.jpg)

The Nightmare (55.5.A)

1781
(Henry Fuseli)

Curator's Comments
Fuseli conjures up a terrifying image filled with mystery and panic, in addition to a vague disturbing humor. The little monster sitting on a supine body suggests the way the woman feels in the grip of a demonic nightmare and not necessarily what she might dream.
