Relief of Peasants Driving Cattle and Fishing (30.371)

2345/2181 BC
(Egyptian)

Curator's Comments
These scenes of the daily life of ancient Egypt were carved and painted on the stone walls of a tomb. Cattle are driven across a canal, and fishermen haul in their nets. The Egyptians believed that representations of their life on earth had the magical ability to insure the quality of their existence in the afterlife.
