Madame Cezanne (70.160.jpg)

Madame Cezanne (70.160)

c. 1886
(Paul Cézanne)

Curator's Comments
Cézanne painted more than two dozen portraits of his wife, Hortense, whom he first met in 1869 as a nineteen-year-old model. The artist was not interested in expressing the likeness or personality of his wife, but in conveying his own artistic vision through his original painting technique of balanced color “touches.”
