Just as there is an art to science, there is a science to art. Just
ask the DIA Conservation Department. Situated in a newly renovated
facility, this group of highly trained experts acts as the DIA’s own
“CSI” team, painstakingly analyzing each piece of art that crosses
their path and recommending the appropriate treatment. Using
everything from X-ray technology to pigment analysis they help
determine everything about a piece of work’s past - including its age,
creator, and more - and its future, in terms of how to best treat and
store it for the next generation and beyond.
When considering the purchase of an ancient Chinese money tree for
example, the DIA’s own specially trained scientists were brought in to
examine this rare ceramic and bronze jewel. Using new X-ray
diffraction technology they were able to conduct a pigment and
corrosion analysis and provide essential information to help evaluate
the condition and authenticity of the tree. After gathering all the
facts the DIA was well positioned to make an informed decision,
quickly buying this beautiful piece for your enjoyment.
Not only do these highly trained individuals work on the DIA’s
extraordinary collection, they also lend their expertise to cultural
institutions throughout Michigan and beyond. From Marquette to
Muskegon, DIA staff help their colleagues throughout the state by
performing conservation treatments; addressing questions of technique,
appropriate storage or display conditions; and verifying authenticity.
See the Statewide Services page for more information on how the DIA
expands its reach in other areas to help preserve and promote cultural
resources for various communities.
